KIMIK celebrates 30th anniversary at Nuuk Art Museum
Once a year, you can get a snapshot of the Greenlandic visual arts scene when the Artists’ Association KIMIK presents their summer exhibition. This year, approximately 17 artists are participating with around 100+ brand new works.
The exhibition opens on the 22nd of May at 5 pm at Nuuk Art Museum with free admission and access for all. It’s been 30 years since the association was founded, and a big celebration is planned.
KIMIK was founded in 1995, and they can therefore celebrate their 30th anniversary this year. Since their founding, they have played a significant role in the development of the modern Greenlandic art scene. The association consists of members such as Buuti Pedersen, Kristine Spore Kreutzmann, Inuk Silis Høegh, Miki Jacobsen and Lisbeth Karline Poulsen. Traditionally, the exhibitions have consisted of a wide range of Greenlandic art consisting of carvings, paintings, ceramics, mixed media, installations, video works and prints. The association consists of 24 artists today.
The anniversary exhibition is entitled “Avatangiisit” and reflects the physical, cultural and existential surroundings that the KIMIK artists both navigate and interpret in their works, but also emphasizes how the members of KIMIK constitute a special artistic community.
There will be several events with the exhibition, including a special artist talk under the concept TAMASSA, where four artists from KIMIK in up-close and intimate atmospheres will tell stories about their work and practice. It will be on Saturday evening, the 24th of May at 7 pm. Tickets will be available for purchase at Nuuk Art Museum.
The exhibition “Avatangiisit” opens on the 22nd of May 2025 and can be visited until the end of August 2025 at Nuuk Art Museum. The exhibition is funded by Greenland’s Self-Rule Government’s Tips and Lottery funds.
The 22nd of May also marks Nuuk Art Museum’s 20th anniversary, which will be celebrated side by side with KIMIK’s anniversary exhibition.
